The Deep Dive

The Song Breakdown

Come Sail Away's famous intro is catchy, and for a piano tune fairly simple. But when played on guitar, it becomes something much trickier.

As a young guitar player, I was obsessed with trying to make my guitar sound like a piano. Not literally, of course. I’ve since learned that what I was really after was guitar arrangements that sounded good on their own, no accompaniment needed. There are a lot of terms for that kind of guitar playing; fingerstyle, chords-and-melody - each of which carry their own connotations. But in the end, what I’d discovered was my love for arranging songs for guitar, which has carried over into my current playing.

This arrangement of Come Sail Away takes advantage of the repeating bass line, simple on piano, but a little harder to keep up with on guitar (gotta keep practicing with that right thumb!). I think it sounds great on classical guitar or steel string, but I chose to use my nylon guitar for this recording. Something about the shorter sustain of the nylon guitar just makes it sound a little better with these “piano-esque” chords and melody arrangements.

The Grand Illusion

The Album

The Grand Illusion, Styx's 7th album released on 7-7-77, has always been a personal favorite of mine. It's grand and ambitious, each song seemingly designed to echo in the wings of stadiums of any size. And yet the songs have an underlying sensitivity to them that keeps you coming back even when your amphitheater is limited to the size of your own head.
